If you're preparing to self-publish your book, one of the most essential—and often overlooked—steps is manuscript formatting. Proper formatting not only ensures your book looks professional, but it also helps ensure a smooth publishing experience. Whether you're working on a print book, an eBook, or both, formatting is crucial.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the key steps to properly format your manuscript, from basic formatting guidelines to tools that can make the process easier.
Why Formatting Your Manuscript is Important
Formatting your manuscript correctly is important for several reasons:
Professionalism: A well-formatted book looks polished and credible, which increases the likelihood that readers will take you seriously.
Readability: Proper formatting ensures your book is easy to read, with consistent spacing, margins, and headings.
Compatibility: Different publishing platforms (Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, etc.) have specific formatting requirements. Proper formatting ensures your book meets these guidelines and displays correctly across various devices and formats.
Basic Formatting Guidelines for Your Manuscript
Whether you're using Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or another writing tool, here are the key formatting guidelines to follow:
Margins: Set your margins to 1 inch on all sides. If you’re preparing for print, check the specific guidelines of the platform you're using (they may vary slightly).
Font: Stick to standard, easy-to-read fonts like Times New Roman or Garamond, size 12. Avoid decorative fonts, as they can be difficult to read.
Line Spacing: Set your line spacing to 1.5 or double-spacing. This makes your text easier to read and leaves room for edits and comments if necessary.
Paragraphs: Use proper paragraph indentation—typically 0.5 inches. Avoid extra spaces between paragraphs unless you’re starting a new chapter or section.
Page Numbers: Add page numbers starting from the first page of your manuscript, but skip the title page. You can easily insert page numbers in Word under the "Insert" tab.
How to Format Chapter Breaks and Headings
Formatting chapter breaks and headings properly gives your manuscript a polished, organized feel.
Chapter Titles: Center your chapter titles and make them bold or in a larger font size (16–18 pt). Ensure consistency throughout your manuscript.
Section Breaks: Always leave extra space before the start of a new chapter. This helps create a clean break for readers and adds visual structure to your book.
eBook Formatting vs. Print Formatting
When formatting for eBooks vs. print books, there are some key differences to consider:
eBooks: Formatting for eBooks is flexible, but it’s crucial to ensure your content displays well across different devices. Use software like Calibre or Scrivener to convert your manuscript into formats like ePub or MOBI. Also, make sure your chapters are clearly defined, and include a clickable table of contents.
Print Books: For print books, formatting is more rigid. You need to maintain consistent page size, margins, and fonts, and you may need to include a bleed (extra image area) for the cover, depending on the print platform’s requirements. Make sure your content fits within the trim size, ensuring no content is cut off during printing.
Formatting Tools for Authors
There are several tools that can help streamline the formatting process, especially if you're looking for a polished look without a lot of technical work:
Vellum: One of the best tools for formatting both eBooks and print books. It’s user-friendly and offers beautiful, professional layouts. Vellum takes care of the heavy lifting, letting you focus on writing.
Scrivener: Scrivener is excellent for authors who are in the writing stage but want to start organizing and formatting as they go. It’s a great tool for managing large projects and offers templates for different formats.
Microsoft Word: Don't underestimate Word! It’s still one of the most powerful tools for manuscript formatting, especially when used in conjunction with styles for headings, page layout, and consistency across the document.
Atticus: I recently came across Atticus. Atticus is an all-in-one writing and formatting tool built specifically for indie authors. It combines the functionality of Google Docs with built-in print and eBook formatting—saving you time, money, and tech headaches. It is the most cost effective, and available on all devices. Created for you by other authors.
Final Thoughts
Formatting your manuscript may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a bit of patience, you can create a polished, professional-looking book. Whether you're preparing for eBook or print publishing, following these guidelines will ensure your book is ready for distribution.
