From invisible to irresistible: how to get your book into the hands of readers who need it.
So you've written and published your book—now what?
Welcome to Part 4 of the Self-Publishing 101 Series, where we focus on marketing your masterpiece.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the beginner-friendly strategies I used to promote my books The Invisible Thread, The Paper Heart That Couldn't Break, and The Night the Stars Took a Rest. These steps helped me grow awareness, build an audience, and actually sell books—without a marketing team or a huge budget.
Step 1: Build a Personal Brand
Readers connect with people, not just products. I chose to market under my real name, Jessica Scullino, and created consistent visuals, tone, and values across social media platforms including, TikTok, Pinterest, Youtube and my website. My brand? Heartfelt, honest, creative.
Step 2: Use Social Media (Strategically)
Don’t just post your book cover—tell your story. I used videos to share character backstories, book aesthetics, and behind-the-scenes writing struggles. I also used TikTok trends with my own twist. Using Creator Search Insights that relate to my author brand. Authenticity wins.
Step 3: Email Lists Matter
I started an email list through Wix, offering a free printable or exclusive chapter as a lead magnet. This allowed me to speak directly to my readers outside of social platforms.
Step 4: Leverage Pinterest and SEO
Pinterest acts like a search engine. I created pins for blog posts, book quotes, and free resources that linked back to my store and book pages. Add searchable terms like “books that heal,” “children’s books about loss,” or “fantasy for middle grade readers.”
Step 5: Join Bookish Communities
I joined Facebook author groups, GoodReads communities, and book expos (local and virtual). Every small interaction helped me grow my reach organically.
Final Thoughts:
You don’t need to be a marketing expert to sell your book. You just need to believe in your message, show up consistently, and connect with real people. Keep experimenting, and don't forget—marketing is storytelling, too.
