Essential Steps for Self-Publishing Success: ISBNs, Copyrights, and Barcodes for Canadian Authors
Self-publishing is an exciting and rewarding journey, but it’s important to get the basics right before your book hits the shelves—both physical and virtual. If you’re an author based in Canada, there are a few essential steps you need to take to ensure your book is properly identified, protected, and ready for distribution. In this post, I’ll walk you through the critical steps to take when setting up your book for success.
1. How to Obtain an ISBN for Your Book
The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique identifier for your book that helps retailers and libraries track it in their systems. Whether you’re publishing a print book, eBook, or audiobook, you’ll need an ISBN for each format.
Here in Canada, you can apply for an ISBN through the Canadian ISBN Service System. The best part? It’s completely free! All you need is a government-issued account, and you can register your ISBN for both physical and digital formats of your book.

2. Copyrighting Your Work
While copyright is automatically granted as soon as you create an original work, registering your copyright gives you legal protection in case anyone tries to infringe upon your rights. Copyright registration is not only important for protecting your work but also adds another layer of credibility when publishing your book.
To register your copyright in Canada, head to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). The registration process is simple and affordable, and it ensures you’re legally protected.

3. Generating Barcodes for Your Book
Once you’ve got your ISBN, it’s time to generate a barcode. Barcodes are essential for physical books as they enable retailers to scan and sell your book efficiently. A barcode is essentially a visual representation of your ISBN and is often placed on the back cover of your book.
There are several online tools that let you easily create barcodes from your ISBN. Bookow.com and Barcode Mania are excellent resources for generating barcodes for your book. Both platforms allow you to download your barcode and use it in your book's design.

Closing Thoughts
By following these simple steps—securing your ISBN, registering your copyright, and generating a barcode—you’re setting your book up for success in the world of self-publishing. If you’re new to self-publishing or still working through the process, don’t worry! Each step is a building block to getting your book into readers' hands.
